Igaming operator William Hill has recently made the decision to switch to 100% renewable energy sources. The company has made the switch as it looks to support green initiatives and cut back on its carbon footprint.
William Hill has now switched its entire UK electricity supply to Total Gas and Power, a business energy provider in the UK that offers renewable energy sources. By opting for the Pure Green energy plan, William Hill will be moving away from grid electricity and toward solar, wind, and hydro power. These methods have a much smaller impact on the environment, avoiding the production of pollutants and greenhouses gases that could have a negative effect on climate change.
After the switch, William Hill will save about 61,500 tonnes of CO2 over the course of its three-year contract. This is a significant amount of CO2 and equivalent to 38,000 cars in the UK or 16,667 one-way flights from London to Las Vegas. In addition to changing its energy supplier, William Hill is also supporting other green initiatives.
One of the other main projects that William Hill is involved in is the rollout of Smart Metering at all of its retail locations. William Hill currently operates over 2,000 betting shops across the UK, and by the end of 2021, it plans to fit Smart Meters into all of them. This will further increase the CO2 savings and reduce energy wastage, helping to protect the environment.
Should Igaming Companies Do More for the Environment?
Compared to other types of businesses, betting companies such as William Hill have a relatively small impact on the environment. However, that doesn’t mean that they don’t still have a responsibility to do more to make change happen. By helping to reduce carbon emissions and cutting down on energy wastage, igaming companies can make a big difference and help to provide a positive impact on the world.
In addition to helping the planet, focusing on green initiatives can also have a positive impact on long-term success. Modern consumers are more likely to avoid companies that have a negative impact on the environment, and many will also show greater loyalty to companies that do support green initiatives.
David Medori, Chief Procurement Officer at William Hill, gave a statement on the decision to switch to renewable energy sources:
“We have prioritized the environment as being extremely important to William Hill and have committed to becoming a Carbon Neutral Business. We have established aggressive targets over five years in C02 reduction on Energy, Waste, Transportation and Water. All metrics are on target. We have an Environmental Management Forum for driving through key initiatives and ensuring these are on both operating and PLC Board agendas.”
William Hill has been focusing on its expansion strategy over the past few years, with the last major move being Buenos Aires . Regardless of its other aims, the company is still committed to green initiatives and helping to reduce its carbon footprint, which is a great sign for its long-term success.
